HOW IT WORKS

“Functional medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual's illness. As the graphic illustrates, a diagnosis can be the result of more than one cause.”

How does getting a treatment plan from Dr. Hennie work?

Please visit the ‘Services’ tab to see appointment offerings. The first step is to complete and return an Intake Form. We need to understand your medical history holistically, first and foremost. A treatment plan including recommendations for testing, supplements, diet, lifestyle changes, and more will be provided within 72 hours of visit.

Note: If you need an Intake Form, please email DrHennieWell@gmail.com to request one. The intake form must be completed and returned no less than 48 hours prior to your first visit.

COMMON PROCEDURES:

GASTROINTESTINAL MICROBIOME TESTING

GI microbiome testing and treatment is a prevalent cause of digestive system issues including pain, flatulence, abdominal bloating, constipation, etc. The microbiome is the collection of all microbes, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and their genes, that naturally live on our bodies and inside us. The microbiome is often a key cause of mood disturbance, poor sleep, chronic pain. It is also directly linked to immune health, inflammation and autoimmune disease.

FOOD SENSITIVITY AND ALLERGY TESTING

Allergies and sensitivities are two different issues. With very few exceptions, virtually all food sensitivity can be eliminated by repairing the gut and eliminating sources of inflammation.

HORMONE TESTING

All human hormones – including testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, thyroid, cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine and insulin – are part of one interconnected system. For example, an individual experiencing issues with thyroid hormones may benefit from evaluating and balancing other hormonal imbalances within the body. By looking at this system holistically, we often can uncover ways to regain the natural balance that conventional Western medicine overlooks.

TOXIC BURDEN TESTING

All human beings have toxins that accumulate in our systems over the course of a lifetime.

Our bodies are not designed to detox artificial chemicals and heavy metal toxins, and these buildup in muscles, bones, connective tissue and the brain and are a factor in illness.

By testing for these contaminants, we can support their detoxification.

Researchers at the Environmental Working Group, an environmental advocacy organization, and fellow nonprofit Commonweal, found an average of 200 industrial chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of a small sample of babies born in U.S. hospitals.

ORGANIC ACID TESTS

The organic acids in your urine and blood give important information to determine deficits and excesses of every nutrient, protein, enzyme, building block and repair mechanism in the body.

GENETIC, NEUROTRANSMITTER AND OTHER TESTING

Genetic, Neurotransmitter, and a variety of other testing is available as needed.
Genetic patterns do not necessarily determine illness. Genes can be turned on and off.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES & SUPPLEMENTS

Lifestyle changes are often the foundation of any treatment plan that Dr. Hennie creates.

In order to rebalance the system, supplements are often needed at the beginning of any treatment plan. Dr. Hennie does not endorse supplements as the foundation of maintaining or restoring health.

Dr. Hennie seeks to carefully prescribe supplements and help you achieve lifestyle changes at your own pace.

If you feel unable to change detrimental lifestyle habits, learn and practice stress management tools, evolve eating and exercise patterns in some way, then this may not be the most appropriate course of treatment for you.

We are always seeking holistic solutions to complex issues, which always requires patience and collaboration. We believe in you, and look forward to working together towards better health!

OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & notes

Does Dr. Hennie take my insurance?

Dr. Hennie cannot bill insurance because of insurance regulations. You can submit a Superbill to your insurance for reimbursement and we encourage calling your insurance provider to request coverage as a Specialty Care Provider. This is similar to the insurance process for seeing a cardiologist, dermatologist, or other SCP.

Many of the tests and blood lab procedures recommended by Dr. Hennie are covered by insurance or Medicare.

What is FullScript?

Fullscript is a practitioner-driven platform for prescribing supplements and vitamins and helping patients better manage their health. It is always completely up to you to decide if and how you’d like to procure supplements and vitamins.

Fullscripts will email you directly with supplements recommended. The FullScript website has useful patient information after you log in. Remember that supplements are often covered by HSA insurance by submitting the FullScript order.

You are not required to order the brands suggested by Fullscript. Always feel free to order the same supplements in other reputable brands

What is meant by ‘blood work’ or ‘blood labs?’

Blood tests are used to measure or examine cells, chemicals, proteins, or other substances in the blood. Blood testing, also known as blood work, is one of the most common types of lab tests.

Blood labs will be ordered for you through Labcorps or Quest, and will almost always be covered by insurance.

What are functional medicine specialty labs?

Functional medicine labs offer a wide variety of testing specific to various health categories, including cardiometabolic health, environmental exposures, sensitivity and allergy testing, genetics, gut function, endocrinology (hormones), and nutrition.

Dr. Hennie typically uses Rupa Health for a variety of specialty labs. Rupa Health will send and manage all of the tests ordered. Medicare covers many (but not all) of these tests and other insurance plans may reimburse you.

Call Rupa’s Customer service at (669) 294-2703 for all questions related to Rupa Health tests.
